Dr Papathanasopoulos was born in Ioannina, Greece. He graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Ioannina (1997). He was trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University Hospitals of Patras, Greece (2001-2003) and Ioannina (2005-2009), respectively. He submitted his Ph.D thesis in the field of anorectal motility disorders in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases at the School of Medicine, University of Ioannina, and received his Ph.D. diploma Summa Cum Laude (2010).
As postgraduate scholar of the Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology, Dr Papathanasopoulos was appointed Clinical Research Fellow in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA (2008-2009), and in University Hospital Gasthuisberg, Leuven, Belgium (2010-2011). His field of training encompassed Neurogastroenterology and the functional GI disorders, with a focus on GI manometry and relevant diagnostic techniques, dysphagia & esophageal motility disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia and the irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, pelvic floor dysfunction and fecal incontinence.
Upon returning to Greece Dr Papathanasopoulos launched his private gastroenterology practice in Ioannina (2012). Since then he has been following patients with the gamut of GI diseases. His practice provides diagnostic endoscopic procedures (upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, endoanal ultrasound) and endoscopic polypectomy. Exclusively for Western Greece he provides the advanced diagnostic services of high resolution esophageal manometry (HRM), anorectal manometry and 24-hour ambulatory esophageal pH monitoring.
Apart from his clinical work, Dr Papathanasopoulos has contributed educational work as invited speaker in postgraduate courses. Furthermore, he has a rich research curicullum with publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, participation in research projects, and presentations in international and greek medical congressess, having received awards and distinctions. He is also a reviewer for international journals. Finally, he regurarly attends local and international conventions following the recent developments of his specialty.
